Teaching Self-Regulation Through Emotion Coaching

For parents of children age 1-7

Children's crying, screaming, fearfulness and anger are big challenges for parents, particularly when the child has a limited vocabulary to describe what's wrong. Emotion coaching, when used over time, helps children to calm themselves more quickly, experience less stress in their lives, and become better problem solvers.

Getting Organized: Where Do We Start?

This 2-hour class will examine the common pitfalls in getting organized and then, using Adlerian principals, find inspiration in the benefits of a more organized household. You will leave with concrete tips on de-cluttering your house and your schedule to make sure you have space and time to enjoy your family life.

Setting Limits with Extra-Challenging Children

For parents of children age 4-14

Some kids challenge their parents to develop more skills -- whether for thinking on your feet to deal with a perplexing situation in the moment or for setting the boundaries that will enable your child to become more reasonable and cooperative over the long term. This workshop will help you understand and appreciate your child's personality, maintain your calm, and use positive tools to help your child learn more appropriate behaviors. Extra-challenging children include those who are oppositional, distractible, inattentive, or have sensory or learning issues.

Planning for Safe Teen Driving

For parents with or without their teens, age 14 and up

Family members working together can substantially reduce the risks of crashes in the first years of teen driving. Learn about the problems experienced by novice teen drivers and proven strategies for teens and parents to safely navigate this critical stage.

National Safety Council Guidebook on teen driving is supplied, along with current state guidelines for novice drivers. This workshop does not replace driver's education requirements. Parents can attend alone or with their teen.

When Parents Disagree on How to Parent

For all parents

Couples often have different ideas about parenting. One wants to be firm, the other kind. Conflicts might arise over priorities for the children, for example, academics vs. extracurricular activities. Find out why it's important to work together for what is best for your children, and how to do that in a way that meets the needs of both parents.

Presenter: Barbara Fairfield LCMFT, Adlerian therapist.

Note: This is an interactive workshop. You will benefit more by attending with your parenting partner, but that is not required. Participants who come without partners will be paired with each other for the exercises.
