Communicating with Teens and Talking About Sensitive Subjects

For parents of children ages 13-18

Teens often seem to tune parents out and shut down. Your communication style greatly affects how much your teen hears on key subjects. Sign up for Week 1 (2/1) of this popular series to focus on key communication skills. Add on the additional two classes to focus on effective ways to talk about drug and alcohol use (2/8) and sexuality (2/15).

Setting Limits for Young Children

For parents of children ages 1 - 4

Limits help young children learn to go to bed on time, pick up after themselves and get along with others. Limits also provide security, order and an understanding of the way the world works. Learn to say "no" and mean it -- in firm, friendly and age-appropriate ways.

Raising a Responsible Only Child

For all parents with one child.

Parents of onlies worry about the lack of siblings and about either excessively pressuring or overindulging their one and only. Learn how positive discipline works to encourage cooperation, self-sufficiency, and age-appropriate social skills.

Journey Toward Intimacy

For any couple in a committed, intimate relationship.

Presenters: Barbara and Don Fairfield are a certified marriage enrichment leader couple with Better Marriages.

This all-day workshop is for couples who are interested in exploring where they are in their development of a close, connected and passionate relationship. The all-day format will allow couples to process more completely some of their issues. Bring a bag lunch. Beverages will be provided.

Family Facebook Night

For parents with or without their children ages 10 and up

Get to know Facebook privacy settings and other features to keep kids safe. In this computer lab workshop at St. John's Episcopal School in Olney, Alecia Berman-Dry, St. John's technology coordinator and i-Safe Web Safety trainer, will teach the hands-on skills both parents and children need.

Unsure what to do about tantrums, aggressive behavior and lack of cooperation? Wondering how to discipline your child without getting into a power struggle? Family Council Workshop

For all family members, age 6 and up.

In many families parents make most of the decisions. At PEP we believe that everyone in a family has much to learn and much to contribute to:

  • increasing cooperation and increasingly sharing responsibility
  • making plans and coordinating activities
  • listening to each other and being heard
  • solving problems and setting limits

Come with your children to learn the skills for organizing the business of being a cooperative family. When registering, please include the ages of children attending.

"You Can't Make Me Do That!" -- Power Tools for Power Struggles

For parents of children ages 4 - 12.

Nobody wins a power struggle between a parent and child. Even if a parent is successful in making a child do something, the parent is left with the feeling of frustration that there had to be a fight in the first place. This workshop will focus on the causes of power struggles, the tools to prevent them, and how to transform fighting into cooperation.
